Direct answer
Human cleaning remains part of documented robotaxi depot work. Moove’s Miami deployment posting includes interior and exterior cleaning, sanitization and biohazard removal. Avomo’s Austin associate role includes vehicle readiness and inspections. Those job descriptions do not establish that someone inspects a car after every trip. [1] [2]
Cleaning is part of vehicle readiness
The useful distinction is between routine readiness work and a response to a reported mess. For a fleet buyer, cleaning is not complete merely because a task was assigned: the vehicle needs an acceptance decision before returning to passenger service.
AV Steward suggests defining the handoff explicitly: who reports a problem, who removes the vehicle from service, where the work happens, what is documented and who releases the vehicle. This is a planning recommendation, not a published universal operator workflow.
Rider cleaning fees are not vendor rates
| Operator | Policy | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Waymo [3] | $50 initial fee for a mess self-reported during the ride; smoking is excluded from that option. | Unreported issues: $100 for a first violation, increasing for later violations. |
| Tesla [4] | $50 for moderate messes; $150 for severe messes, including biowaste or smoking. | The fee depends on the type and severity of the mess. |
What riders should do
Waymo asks riders who enter a dirty vehicle to tell Support promptly. Its policy distinguishes self-reporting a mess from failing to report one. [3]
Use the operator’s current support channel. Do not treat a rider fee as evidence of what a cleaning contractor earns, the operator’s actual cleanup cost or a guaranteed refund.
Cabin cleaning, sensor care and repair are different jobs
For a provider, specify the boundaries of the work. Interior reset, exterior washing, contamination handling and sensor care may require different instructions. A detailing service description does not authorize changes to cameras, lidar or other operator equipment.
AV Steward suggests asking the buyer for permitted products and methods, escalation conditions, completion records and the point at which a vehicle must be referred for specialist work. If contamination requires additional controls or training, establish those before accepting the job.
What we can say about cleaning automation
The reviewed job descriptions establish human tasks. They do not measure the percentage of cleaning performed by people or demonstrate that a fleet is cleaned entirely by robots.
We have left out the research’s permit-based descriptions of cleaning robots and unconfirmed carwash installations. An equipment reference in a plan is not evidence that it has replaced labor in daily operation.
Frequently asked questions
Is every robotaxi cleaned after every ride?
The sources reviewed do not establish a universal after-every-ride cleaning or inspection schedule.
Who pays the cleaner?
That depends on the employment or service contract. A rider’s cleaning fee is a separate charge and does not reveal contractor compensation.
Can a normal detailing business serve a robotaxi fleet?
Relevant cleaning capability is a starting point. The buyer still needs to agree on access, instructions, scope and acceptance; EV or detailing experience alone does not establish a robotaxi relationship.
